FAQ on Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA)

For All Iowa Medicaid Trading Partners

On March 1, 2010, Iowa Medicaid Enterprise will require all providers to receive their remittance advice electronically. The following are some of the most common questions the EDI Support Services (EDISS) helpdesk receives regarding this requirement.

1.     What is an Electronic Remittance Advice (i.e., RA/Payment Advice/835 transaction)?

The ERA is the electronic version of the paper Remittance Advice (RA).  It explains to providers which claims paid and denied for each payment cycle. EDISS refers to it as either the Electronic Remittance Advice or the 835 transaction.

2.     How do I register for the Electronic Remittance Advice?

Registrations for ERA are completed in Total OnBoarding (TOB). A link to TOB can be found at www.edissweb.com. Select the Total Onboarding tab at the top of the page and select Iowa. The TOB page provides a link to TOB and is home to TOB user guides and tutorials to assist with registering.

3.     Once I am signed up for the Electronic Remittance Advice where do I log into to find it?

Your ERA can be located by logging into the Iowa Medicaid Web Portal at https://ime-ediss.noridian.com/iowaxchange. Instructions for downloading the ERA are located in the Web Portal User Guide located at www.edissweb.com. Select the Training and Help tab, select Iowa, and select Using the Iowa Medicaid Web Portal.

4.     When will the Electronic Remittance Advice be available to download?  Will I be notified that the Electronic Remittance Advice is available?

ERA's are delivered every Wednesday. It is the responsibility of the facility to check the Web Portal to verify if an Electronic Remittance Advice is available to download.

5.     Do I need software to view the Electronic Remittance Advice?

Yes, you need HIPAA compliant software to translate the Electronic Remittance Advice. EDISS offers PC-ACE Pro32 to our Trading Partner community. This free software is available for download on our website www.edissweb.com and has the functionality to translate the ERA. Please remember that prior to downloading, EDISS requires a Software Licensing Agreement be on file. For providers using other practice management software, please check with your software vendor to determine if your software can translate the ERA.

Translating an Electronic Remittance (835)

EDI Support Services (EDISS) would like to remind Iowa Medicaid providers registering for the 835 transaction to have a way to translate the transaction.

Receiving your Remittance Advice electronically has many advantages, but it is necessary to have software that can translate that Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA).

EDISS offers PC-ACE Pro32 to our Trading Partner community. This free software is available for download on our website www.edissweb.com and has the functionality to translate the ERA. Please remember that prior to downloading, EDISS requires a Software Licensing Agreement on file. For providers using other practice management software, please check with your software vendor to determine if your software can translate the 835 transaction.
