A MLN Matters article regarding the 2009-2010 Flu
season has recently been distributed by CMS. It contains important information
about the H1N1 virus. To read the article, please use this link: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/MLNMattersArticles/downloads/SE0926.pdf.
The Centers for Medicare &
Medicaid Services (CMS) developed the Medicare Remit Easy Print (MREP) software
to give Medicare Part B providers a FREE tool to read and print an Electronic
Remittance Advice (ERA).
Providers who use the MREP
software package have the ability to print paper documentation that can be used
to reconcile accounts receivable, as well as create documents that can be
included with claim submission to secondary or tertiary payers. The output of
MREP is similar to the current Standard Paper Remittance (SPR) format. The
availability to print an ERA in the Standard Paper Remittance (SPR) advice
format is cost effective. EDI Support Services (EDISS) encourages providers to
use MREP or other software to read, view, and print an ERA to eliminate any
need for SPR’s.
MREP Version 2.7 will be
available October 5, 2009.
The updates listed below are effective with the October 2009 release.
1. MREP software will accept both the X12 835 ERA
version 4010A1 files and the X12 835 ERA version 5010 files for processing.
2. Specific changes needed for MREP 5010.
3. "MEDICARE REMITTANCE ADVICE" will
display/print on all pages of 4010A1 and 5010 MREP RAs.
4. The display/print order will be changed. The Provider #, Date and Page # will be on separate
lines.
5. Updated Codes.ini file.
Note: Since updates are being
made to the MREP software for October 2009, the updated list of Remittance
Advice Remark Codes (RARCs) and Claim Adjustment
Reason Codes (CARCs) was included with the updated
MREP software.
EDI Support Services (EDISS) is committed
to helping trading partners lower administrative burdens and costs by
encouraging the use of 835 Electronic Remittance Advice (ERA). Healthcare
providers, who have made the switch from paper remittances to ERA, prefer
receiving ERA. Advantages include:
·
Faster –
Transfer time-sensitive remittance data within seconds with ERA, as opposed to
waiting for paper remittances to arrive through the mail.
·
Expedited Reconciliation – Reconcile patient accounts more quickly with the ERA. ERA
accelerates reimbursements from patients and secondary insurances.
·
Automatic Posting – Automatically post payment upon receipt (of an ERA) with many
practice management software packages. Providers may work with their vendor to verify if their
current software has this capability. EDISS provides a vendor contact list in
the Software and Vendors section of the EDISS website. Providers
can use this list to determine which vendors have automatic posting capability.
·
More Detail
– The ERA transaction contains all content found on a paper remittance plus
more detail. In addition, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
(CMS) states:
The information shown in
paper remittances notices mirrors the information available in the standardized
ERA transactions. The same adjustment reason codes, remarks, messages,
organization of data at the service, claim, or provider summary level,
balancing formulas, beneficiary and provider liability information, and summary
data are shown in both.
·
FREE Viewing Software – CMS offers two free software products to view, print, and read
the ERA: Medicare Remit Easy Print (MREP) for Medicare Part B and PC Print for Medicare Part A.
·
Positive User Experience – Response from a user who has tried the free software:
I was surprised that it’s
so easy to use! I like how you can print out hard copies of the ERA; it’s much
better than going into a file drawer and hunting for a paper copy!
To register for ERA, add the transaction
to your profile in Total OnBoarding (TOB) and
indicate how the transaction will be received. If you need assistance with the
registration process, see the TOB user guide located at www.edissweb.com.
For additional help, contact the EDI Help Desk at
1-800-967-7902 or E-mail support@edissweb.com to start receiving
the ERA.
